What Is Speciality Grade Coffee?
Specialty grade coffee is a term used to describe coffee that scores 80 points or above on a 100-point scale. The term was originally coined by the Coffee Quality Institute to describe coffees that met a certain set of standards.
These standards included criteria such as: being grown at a high altitude, having a certain bean size, having a certain level of acidity, and being free of defects. People who put their lives on the line to produce the highest quality coffee are the ones who make specialty coffee possible.
The SCA’s grading system dates back to the 1980s and is based on flavor descriptors. These descriptors can be used to identify coffees that have been roasted at a higher-than-average temperature, resulting in a more natural flavor profile.
